(Vatican Radio) A recent increase in the numbers of attacks on Christian places of
worship in Africa has caused great concern for those engaged in interfaith dialogue
across the continent. Nigerian Church leaders warned recently of a ‘palpable danger
in the air’, while the head of the Vatican press office, Fr Federico Lombardi spoke
of the need to “oppose irresponsible acts that fuel hatred among different religions”.
But what is behind the upsurge of attacks and just what can the Churches do to try
and oppose the extremist Islamic groups that are targeting Christians and moderate
Muslims alike? Vatican Radio’s Philippa Hitchen put those questions to Anthony
O’Mahoney, theology professor and expert on Christian-Muslim relations at the Jesuit
