Archbishop of Brisbane: glorious gift of the gospel ..

(VaticanRadio) The Archbishop of Brisbane Mark Benedict Coleridge recently dropped by our studios here at Vatican Radio to be interviewed by Veronica Scarisbrick who asked him if he could identify three areas of mission he felt should be implemented in a special way in his archdiocese : " One is certainly passing on the treasures of our faith to the young, that can't be taken for granted nor is it done by process of cultural osmosis as it was once upon a time. ..and to find the right words , images and gestures to do that, that's absolutely critical...the young have a right to receive the glorious gift of the gospel."

More generally Archbishop Coleridge points to engage the culture in new ways, remarking how it is utterly foreign to the Catholic culture to turn our backs on it and talk to to ourselves .

The third point he makes regards the necessity to become more contemplative, by that he means: "Jesus Christ is never just a wise teacher whose teachings we must strive to follow or just a role model from a distant past whom we must strive to emulate.That is simply not what Christianity is. We need to encounter him as presence and power in the here and now and that new contemplative encounter, as I would call it, seeing the face of Jesus, hearing his voice is where any genuine newness will start.."...

In this interview Veronica Scarisbrick also asks the Archbishop of Brisbane about the role of the liturgy, a question which eventually leads to speaking of the Second Vatican Council and the forthcoming Year of Faith .
