(Vatican Radio) The Holy See’s representative to Israel and Palestine, Archbishop
Antonio Franco is preparing to retire from his position after attending last week’s
meeting of ROACO, the Reunion of Organisations for Aid to the Oriental Churches. Earlier
this month, the 75 year old nuncio also took part in the Bilateral Permanent Working
Commission meeting between the Holy See and the State of Israel which, according to
a joint communiqué, made “significant progress” towards an agreement on the economic
and fiscal status of the Church in the Holy Land. The next meeting of the Commission
is scheduled to take place on December 6th at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign
Affairs. But just how much hope is there that these decade-long negotiations will
reach a conclusion in the near future? And what does the nuncio see as the most significant
achievements of time in this most delicate of diplomatic positions? Vatican Radio’s
Philippa Hitchen caught up with him at the conclusion of the ROACO meeting to find
