June 21, 2012: At a press conference held at the Vatican press office Archbishop
Rino Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization
announced the Year of Faith (October 11, 2012 - November 24, 2013).
In his
address to the press he quoted Pope Benedict XVI who in his Apostolic Letter Fidei
Porta had written "Since the beginning of my ministry as Successor of Peter I mentioned
the need to rediscover the path of faith to highlight the growing evidence of renewed
enthusiasm and joy of an encounter with Christ ". “In light of this thought,” archbishop
Fisichella said “the pope proclaimed a Year of the faith that will start in the happy
coincidence of two anniversaries: the fiftieth of the opening of Vatican II (1962)
and the twentieth of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1992).
"The
Year of the faith, above all, aims to support the faith of many believers who do not
cease in the daily grind with conviction and courage to entrust their lives to the
Lord Jesus . We want this year to inspire the believers with a desire to profess faith
in its fullness and with renewed conviction, confidence and hope. It will be a good
opportunity also to enhance the celebration of faith in the liturgy, and especially
in the Eucharist. At the same time, we hope that the testimony of life for believers
will grow in its credibility” he added.
During the meeting the calendar of
major events to be held in Rome in the Year of Faith was unveiled. The website and
logo that will mark the events throughout the year were also presented.
