Syria: UN mission commander briefs Security Council
The head of the United Nations Mission in Syria has been briefing the UN Security
Council for the first time since they suspended operations in the face of rising violence.
Norwegian General Robert Mood said he took the decision to suspend operations of his
300-strong inspection force after their mission and vehicles were harassed and even
directly attacked, as fighting in Syria escalating to what peacekeeping officials
are calling full-scale civil war. International efforts to halt the violence are deadlocked
because the veto-wielding UN Security Council members, Russia and China, have blocked
tougher action against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose forces are estimated
to have killed at least 10 thousand people in their attempts to put down the increasingly
organized rebellion against his rule. Listen to our report:
