The specific theme for Wednesday at the International Eucharistic Congress in Dublin
was: Priesthood and Ministry. Mark Davies is the Bishop of Shrewsbury in England
and on Monday night drew a crowd of thousands of people when he was asked to give
the first catechesis for young people at the congress. He spoke to Emer McCarthy
about the young peoples' reponse to his intervention, the need and desire to promote
new vocations and also about an upcoming visit to Britain of the relics of the 19th
century French parish priest, St John Marie Vianney.
Bishop Davies said he
was very struck by the "positive character" of the response from his young audience
and said it showed the desire by young people to know "how they can engage and be
witnesses to the faith." He also spoke of a "desire to promote new vocations" and
the importance of saints like John Marie Vianney as role models because they can "lead
us to the heart of our faith."
