June 07, 2012: “Time to rethink and regain control over the future of the human family”
was the title of the statement released by many Church and civil society leaders calling
on governments to focus on the poor and plot a new path to a just and sustainable
world at the Rio+20 talks . The international Catholic Group for Development
and Solidarity, along with many civil society leaders have called upon all governments
to give more attention to the poor and marginalized by society in a way that we realize
an eradication of poverty. We expect that the summit in Rio comes out with a well
founded message of hope for those who are suffering and for the generations to come!
We expect world leaders to embrace their responsibility and to be held accountable
for their commitments. Today we call on world leaders and all people of good will
to realise that we have an opportunity to walk a path together, a path towards rights-based
and equitable development, towards a truly human life, towards a world where we accept
that we are part of creation which has been given in custody to us” said the statement.
