Zimbabwe: rights abuses in diamond fields

The international diamond monitoring body known as the Kimberley Process is holding its annual meeting this week in Washington, DC. International rights groups are calling on Kimberly Process adherents to press Zimbabwe for address of grave human rights abuses in its diamond fields. Fr. Sean O’Leary of the Southern African Bishops’ Conference’s Dennis Hurley Peace Institute told Vatican Radio the Process lacks an effective enforcement mechanism. “If you don’t have something that can implement the process,” he said, “then the process remains exactly what it is: something like ink dried on paper.” Fr. O’Leary said that, while the economic situation in Zimbabwe has improved somewhat of late, the political climate has not, and there continues to be widespread violation of basic civil and human rights.
