With just a hundred days to go before the opening of the Paralympics in London on
August 29th, disabled athletes in countries around the world are preparing
to compete in the 21 different sporting disciplines. Paralympics flames will be lit
in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland over the preceding days, after which
teams of torch bearers will converge on the Olympic stadium in London for the opening
ceremony of the 2012 Paralympic Games. The London games mark a homecoming for
an event which traces its origins to a sports competition for disabled World War two
veterans in England in 1948 – coinciding with the opening day of the Summer Olympics
in London that same year. Britain’s ambassador to the Holy See, Nigel Baker, talks
to Philippa Hitchen about the history of the Paralympics event and the lasting legacy
of these 2012 London games....
