Over 90 people were killed and even more were wounded on Monday when a suicide bomber
attacked a group of soldiers in Yemen’s capital city of Sanaa.
The soldiers
had been practicing for a military parade that was to take place on Tuesday when
the attacker, who was dressed in a military uniform, detonated a bomb that was strapped
under his clothing.
The military parade had been part of the celebration of
National Unity Day, a holiday which commemorates the 1990 unification of north and
south Yemen.
Minister of Defense Major General Mohammed Nasser Ahmed had just
arrived at the city square for the parade just minutes before the explosion, but was
unharmed.
Secretary of administration Ameen Joman spoke to the press about
the bombing.
Yemen has been experiencing a series of deadly attacks since President
Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi replaced Saleh in February saying he would extinguish an Islamist
insurgency, which until now has been concentrated in the south.
