(May 7, 2012) Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday called on charities to join the fight against
child abuse by publicly commending the work by the Italian anti-paedophilia group,
the Meter Association. "I address my cordial salute in particular to the Meter Association,
which promotes engagement in favour of child victims of violence," the Pope said in
Italian, addressing thousands of faithful and tourists in Saint Peter's Square at
the end of the midday “Regina Coeli” prayer. The Pope’s support came on Italy’s
national day for children’s rights. The initiative received support from Italian
president, Giorgio Napolitano, the Italian parliament and numerous bishops. The Catholic
Church has been rocked by sex-abuse scandals dating back decades, and Meter is a pioneer
in Italy in terms of work against abuse by priests. In an interview with Vatican
Radio, Fr. Fortunato Di Noto, who founded the association, said: "With paternity,
firmness and lucidity, this Pope is dealing with the problem of sexual abuse." In
the Church, in all parishes, we cannot remain silent," Fr. Di Noto said.
