(April 28 2012) The XII European Congress for Catechesis is to take place in Rome
(7-10 May). The meeting, promoted by the Council of European Episcopal Conferences
(CCEE), will be attended by bishops and directors of the national offices and bodies
responsible for catechesis within the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe. Preparation
for the meeting has been co-ordinated by the CCEE “Catechesis, school and university”
Commission, chaired by Mgr Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster and President
of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.The focus of the meeting will be the
theme Christian initiation in the perspective of the new evangelisation, with particular
attention on children and young people from 7 to 16 years of age. The Congress and
the theme of Christian initiation fall within the Church’s reflection on the new evangelisation
in the year when the Church commemorates the 20th anniversary of the publication of
the Catechsim of the Catholic Church by Blessed John Paul II, the 50th anniversary
of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, and with a view towards the Year of
Faith. The Council of the Episcopal Conferences of Europe (CCEE) includes the current
33 European Episcopal Conferences, and a dozen other prelates.. The General Secretary
