Survival International launches campaign to save Awá tribe
A major campaign has been launched to save the Awá people of the Brazilian Amazon
who have been called the ‘Earth’s most threatened tribe’. The initiative was launched
this week by Survival International which is the only organisation working for tribal
peoples’ rights worldwide. The Awá’s territory has been invaded by a vast army
of illegal loggers, ranchers and settlers. The situation is now so critical that
that experts have spoken of the tribe’s possible extinction. Lydia O’Kane spoke
to Fiona Watson, Research Director at Survival International about the tribe and their
plight. She said, “…because the forest (in the Amazon) is being destroyed and such
a fast rate, Awá hunters have told me for example that all the game that they rely
on… which is their food source are disappearing fast.” The centerpiece of the campaign
is a short film featuring an appeal by Colin Firth and music by Grammy-winning composer
Heitor Pereira. Listen to Lydia O’Kane’s interview with Fiona Watson
