French documentary shows influence of Blessed Teresa
(April 11, 2012) In eastern India’s West Bengal State, a French documentary about
three social workers inspired by the work of Blessed Teresa premiered in Kolkata
recently. The 55-minute film, called “The Heirs of Mother Teresa” and screened at
the Alliance Française du Bengale, describes the efforts of the social workers to
help people from poor areas of Kolkata. One of the social workers - Urmi Basu, daughter
of a Communist party leader, runs a charity for children of sex workers at the same
place where Blessed Teresa founded Nirmal Hriday, her home for the dying, in Kalighat
in 1952. Another social worker - Arpu Ghosh funds a school for street kids. The film’s
director, Delphine Prunault said the documentary aimed to show the enduring legacy
of Blessed Teresa. The film is like an extended report on new generations of Indians
helping others, he added.
