Continuing drought conditions are bringing food shortages and malnutrition to the
Sahel, the region of Africa due south of the Sahara Desert, stretching from the Atlantic
Ocean to the Red Sea. One of the countries affected in the region is Niger. Nick
Harrop from UK based Catholic aid agency CAFOD has just returned from the country
and spoke to Lydia O’Kane about the situation there. “…I went to some really remote
rural communities and people told me that this was the worst food crisis they could
remember, so worse that the crises that hit Niger in 2010 and 2005.” He goes on
