Relations between the Catholic Church and Cuba's communist government was the main
issue discussed by much of the international media both ahead of and during Pope Benedict's
visit to Cuba. But far less is being said about the island's very difficult economic
situation.
Caritas Internationalis is one of the few independent NGO's active
there. Ryan Worms is a communications officer for Caritas who visited Cuba for the
first time shortly before the Pope's arrival. He spoke to Philippa Hitchen about
his impressions and said he "was struck by the level of poverty in Cuba." He told
her more about Caritas' work on the island which focuses in particular on two vulnerable
groups, the elderly and children, especially those with learning difficulties.
