Nuncio to Syria joins call for end to civilian killings
UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan meets with the Syrian opposition in Turkey on Tuesday,
on the latest leg of his peace mission. Annan has already met with Syrian President
Bashar al-Assad, and has urged an immediate end to the bloodshed in the country, where
UN estimates say more than 8,000 people have died since anti-government protests erupted
a year ago - many of them women and children. The Apostolic Nuncio to Syria, Archbishop
Mario Zenari has joined the UN-Arab League envoy in calling on the international community
to world to send a clear message to Damascus that the killings of civilians must stop
immediately. “I would like to [subscribe to the message of] the Special Envoy of the
UN and Arab League,” said Archbishop Zenari, adding, “Killing of civilians must stop
immediately, and the international community must give a clear message that this situation
is simply unacceptable.” Listen
