Syrian government official defects to opposition

Former UN Secretary Geneal Koffi Annan is in Cairo ahead of a March 10th trip to Syria. He is serving as U.N.-Arab League special envoy on Syria .After meeting with the Egyptian foreign minister on Thursday, he told reporters the Syrian people deserve better than what they are getting, but the solution to the crisis lies in a political settlement.

Earlier in the day, the Syria's deputy oil minister, Abdo Husameddine announced his defection from the government via a Youtube video.
