Papal delegate to the exposition of the Sacred Tunic in Germany
(March 03.2012) Pope Benedict XVI has nominated Canadian Sulpician Cardinal Marc
Ouellet, Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops as his special delegate to the 5th
centenary celebrations of the public exposition of the Sacred Tunic, preserved in
the cathedral of Trier, in the Federal Republic of Germany. The beginning of the celebrations
will be o n 13th April. Bishop Stephan Ackermann of Trier has invited pilgrimages
to view the Holy tunic from April 13th to May 13th, under the
theme “Bring together what is divided.” Tradition holds that the Holy Tunic was the
seamless robe worn by Jesus during his passion. According to the gospel narrative,
the soldiers, unwilling to divide the seamless robe, had cast lots to decide who
should have the tunic. Once again tradition says the Tunic had been brought to Trier
by St Monica, Emperor Constantine’s Mother. Pilgrimages took place at irregular intervals
to view the garment, the most recent have been in 1933, 1959, 1996. The next pilgrimage
with the exhibition of the robe is going to take place in Trier between April 13 -
May 13. 2012. It is the 500th anniversary of the first exposition since 1512, when
Archbishop Richard von Greiffenklau , during an Imperial Diet, on the request of Emperor
Maximilian I who demanded to see the Holy Robe arranged the opening of the altar
that had enshrined the tunic since the building of the Cathedral of Trier
