(Feb.22, 2012) Pope Benedict has sent a message to the National Conference of
Brazil’s Bishops CNBB, for the launching of their annual Lenten “Fraternity Campaign”
under the motto “Let health be spread over the earth”. The papal message addressed
to Cardinal Raymundo Damasceno Assis, Archbishop of Aparecida and President of CNBB,
says a greater spirit of brotherhood and community is needed to care for the sick,
and guide society to ensure that more people have the right of access to the resources
needed for a healthy life. For Christians in particular, says the Pope , the motto
is a Biblical reminder that health goes far beyond simple bodily welfare. Referring
to the episode of the healing of a paralytic, the Pope says that Jesus not only
made him walk again but also forgave him his sins, thus teaching that perfect healing
is also the forgiveness of sins. The Pope pointed out that in keeping with the true
spirit of Lent the fraternity campaign must inspire the hearts of believers and
all people of goodwill to unite to help the sick and suffering. The Pope prayed
to Our Lady of Aparecida for the physical and spiritual health of everyone.
