Diplomats are claiming considerable progress toward overcoming Russian objections
to a U.N. Security Council resolution aimed at halting the violence in Syria, though
demands that President Bashar Assad step aside remain a major sticking point. Western
diplomats insist the U.N. resolution be based on an Arab League peace plan calling
for Assad to step down, allowing for the formation of a new government. Following
a closed-door meeting, several diplomats said they were encouraged by a new constructive
attitude in discussions and some held out the possibility of a vote before by Friday.
The estimates of Syrian and international rights campaigners say over 7 thousand people
have been killed in 10 months of political violence in the country. Listen
