Pope appoints new archbishop for Archdiocese of Karachi
(January 25, 2012) Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday appointed Bishop Joseph Coutts
of Faisalabad, the new archbishop of Karachi in Pakistan. He succeeds Archbishop
Evarist Pinto, who reached the retirement age of 75. Archbishop Coutts was born
in Amritsar, British India on 21st. July 1945. He received his religious
training at Christ the King seminary in Karachi and was ordained priest in Lahore,
Pakistan 9th January, 1971. After ordination, he completed his ecclesiastical studies
in Rome and became professor of philosophy at Christ the King Regional Seminary in
Karachi, then the Rector of St. Mary’s Minor Seminary in Lahore, and later diocesan
vicar general. In 1988, 5th May, Pope John Paul II appointed him Coadjutor
Bishop of Hyderabad in Pakistan, of which he became the bishop in 1990. Eight years
later June 27th, 1998, he was appointed bishop of Faisalabad. He is also the National
Director of Caritas Pakistan. The Archdiocese of Karachi has some 150 thousand
Catholics in a population of 15.5 million.
