The Catholic Church in the U.S. is currently marking its National Migration Week whose
theme this year is “Welcoming Christ in the Migrant.” The key event during this week
is a 3 day conference on the theme of immigration that opens in Salt Lake City, Utah
on Wednesday sponsored jointly by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)
and the Catholic Legal Immigration Network. Entitled “Immigration – a 50-state issue,”
the participants will be calling for a humane federal solution to the problem of illegal
immigration through a comprehensive reform of the current “broken” system.
Kevin
Appleby, is the Director of Migration Policy for the USCCB, and he spoke to Susy Hodges
about the current state of the immigration system and what reforms the Church is calling
