Gunmen from a radical Muslim group attacked a gathering of Christians in Nigeria yesterday
, killing at least 20 people. The assault targeted a town hall where ethnic Igbo Christians
were holding a meeting. The radical Islamist sect Boko Haram claimed responsibility
for the killings, which followed threats by the group to begin specifically targeting
Christians living in the country's Muslim north.
Earlier this week we talked
to the Archbishop of Jos, Paul Kaigama. Speaking of earlier attacks, he said, “All
we can say is that hope is not lost, there still can be a way out. And the only way
out is to fish out the perpetrators of this dastardly act, this terrible act of violence.”
He
said Christians must continue cling to God and to their faith: “As for us Christians,
we continue to hold onto our faith. Nothing should separate us from the love of God,
neither persecution, hunger, famine, whatever. We should follow God and never deviate
from our primary calling as Christians, the vocation to love, the vocation to embrace
all of humanity."
