“While you are united in Berlin with thousands of young people from all over Europe
and other Continents, seeking to delve deeper into the wellsprings of faith with the
brothers of the Taizé community, his Holiness Pope Benedict XVI unites himself to
you in prayer and encourages you to open the path to faith everywhere in the world.”
These were some of the words given by Pope Benedict the XVI to the 30,000 young
people who came to participate thirty-fourth annual meeting of the Taizé community
which this year is being held in Berlin. The welcome that the community has received
from the Catholic and Protestant churches in Germany’s capital, as well as from the
city of Berlin, is profoundly significant, for it shows how far the country has come
in easing the political tensions that had once fiercely divided the East and the West.
