Tamil Nadu Christians to get subsidy for Holy Land visit
(December 22, 2012) The Chief Minister of South India’s Tamil Nadu State has announced
financial assistance for Christians wanting to visit the holy land of Jerusalem.
Ms. J Jayalalithaa announced this during the AIADMK-organized Christmas celebrations
in the city, on Tuesday. “The scheme will be applicable to all sections of the Christian
community. Initially, this assistance will be given to 500 Christians this year,”
she said. The Chief Minister said other demands of the community will also be fulfilled,
amid applause from the audience comprising bishops and pastors at Laity Auditorium
in Kilpauk. Citing the ideals practiced by Jesus Christ, she said that Christ was
all compassionate, even to his enemies. “Christ pleaded for mercy even for those who
crucified him… All should live without the feeling of taking revenge.” Appreciating
the songs rendered by the students of her alma mater - Church Park Convent, she said
the songs brought back memories of her school days. Archbishop A.M. Chinnappa of
Madras-Mylapore offered Ms Jayalalithaa a piece of the Christmas cake she cut. The
Chief Minister said she felt privileged by the gesture. Bishops from various parts
of the state also took part in the celebration.
