A fire swept through a hospital in the Indian city of Kolkata early this morning,
killing at least 35 people and sending emergency workers scrambling to evacuate patients
and medical staff from the building. Local officials have made statements suggesting
they believe hospital negligence is to blame for the blaze, which erupted in the building's
basement and quickly engulfed the hospital in heavy smoke. Witness reports say it
took fire fighters more than an hour to arrive after the fire started, though police
arrived quickly to help with the rescue effort – and dozens of fire engines eventually
arrived at the scene, where by midmorning, the fire was under control and most of
the patients had been evacuated to other hospitals in the area.
