Pope’s condolence message for brutal deaths of missionaries in Burundi
(Nov. 30, 2011) Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday, expressed his sincere condolences
on hearing about the tragic news of the murder of a nun and a lay person, who were
killed on Sunday during a robbery at their mission in Burundi. Another nun was
left injured. The murdered nun, Sr. Lukrecija Mamic and the lay volunteer, Francesco
Bazzani, were killed during a robbery at their mission centre in the Diocese of
Ngozi. The condolence message in the Pope’s name was sent by Vatican Secretary of
State, Cardinal Tarciscio Bertone. It was addressed to the Congregation of the Sisters
of Charity in the Italian city of Brescia, to which the murdered nun belonged, to
Bazzani’s family and to the entire diocesan community of Ngozi. The Pope’s condolence
message prayed to God to welcome in His kingdom those dead, who dedicated their lives
to serving the sick and the poor, and to give courage and hope to the injured nun,
Sr. Carla Lucia Brienza, so that she gets through the ordeal
