UN observes International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
The United Nations today observes the International Day for the Elimination of Violence
against Women. The UN’s World Health Organisation describes violence against women
and girls as a “problem of pandemic proportions”. The organisation says at least one
out of every three women are subject to gender related violence at some point in their
life.
“The Church has a very strong position against any forms of violence
against women, particularly violence against women because they are women, something
that would be a true act of violence based on the sex of a person,” says Human Life
International’s Joseph Meaney. He said Church’s opposition to violence against women
is a consequence of its belief in the equal dignity and equal rights of men and women.
He
mentioned China’s one-child policy and on sex-selective abortions as some of the worst
kinds gender-related violence. “It’s rather rare for human rights organisations to
focus on these human rights violations, these kinds of violence against women”.
