Amongst those present to participate in Papal events in Benin, was Cardinal Wilfrid
Fox Napier, Archbishop of Durban in South Africa.
Cardinal Napier was is also
one of the members of the Special Council for Africa which came after the 2009 2nd
Synod for Africa, the first having taken place in 1994.
Napier was also deeply
involved in the Synod itself, in the deliberations that led up to it, and in the whole
process that followed it. He describes his thoughts and his feelings as he witnessed
the signing of the apostolic exhortation “Africae Munus”.
Cardinal Napier points
out that the document contains precious principles and guidelines for the Church in
South Africa.
Cardinal Napier also speaks of the relevance of this document
to politicians as it raises issues such as good governance and human rights, and elaborates
on the loss of a moral highground previously held by African leaders, the loss of
the ideals and principles preached by fighters of apartheid.
Finally, Cardinal
Napier explains how the Southern African bishops will untertake the process of spreading
"Africae Munus" and plan its implementation.
