More than one hundred Eritrean refugees detained in Egypt were forced to sign repatriation
papers this past weekend. Advocates for the refugees claim that the signatures were
obtained after the detainees were beaten by Egyptian soldiers.
“In this last
month, the Egyptian authorities used forced deportation of refugees from Egypt to
Eritrea or from Egypt to Ethiopia,” said Father Mussie Zerai, the president of the
aid Habeshia Agency aid organisation.
“This is an open violation human rights,
a violation of the international convention for the protection of refugees,” he said.
“I ask the whole international community to intervene to stop this forced deportation
of these refugees.”
