(October 24, 2011) Indian Cardinal Oswald Gracias, archbishop of Bombay has been
elected as the secretary general of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC).
He was elected to the post by the presidents of the FABC in its central committee
meeting on Friday in Bangkok, Thailand. The Cardinal, who is also the president of
Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, the apex body fo the Catholic Church in India,
has been appointed with effect from January 1, 2012. He succeeds Archbishop Orlando
Quevedo from Philippines who completes two terms of office on December 31, 2011. Cardinal
Gracias was also a board member of FABC-Office of Social Communication for 6 years.
FABC is a voluntary association of bishops’ conferences in South, Southeast, East
and Central Asia, established with the approval of the Pope.
