Changing the face of poverty

Father Joseph Wresinski, founder of the Fourth World Movement, inspired the UN in 1992 to recognize October 17 as "The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty." In his speech to thousands on October 17, 1987 at the Trocadero Human Rights Plaza in Paris, France, he stated: "Wherever men and women are condemned to live in poverty, human rights are violated."

Linda Bordoni spoke to Reverend Nick Edwards, Chair of the ADT Fourth World UK movement about this annual observance and its significance.

Fr. Edwards also spoke about the Fourth World movement and its mission. He explains how and where it operates.

Edwards also speaks of who the new poor are in these dark years of global financial crisis. He says that poverty is a scandal in this day and age, and he speaks of his hopes for the future, explaining that only through true engagement with the poor can we really change society....
