(15.11.2011) Caritas India the social service wing of the Indian Catholic Bishops
marked its golden jubilee recently with a two-day workshop on Rights Based Approach
for the Integral Development of the Society through Better Governance concluding Thursday
in Bangalore. Hundred delegates, including representatives of partner organizations
and social activists, took part in the workshop at John’s Medical College Auditorium,
Bangalore. “Ensuring the right to work and food to primary stake-holders, intensive
implementation of government schemes for employment and health, ensuring smooth functioning
of public distribution systems were the major activities of the organization in the
country,” said Caritas India Chairman Bishop Peter Remigius. The prelate said that
Caritas India, which was founded in 1963, has been recognized by the Government of
India as a leading NGO in disaster response for its efforts in relief, rehabilitation
and follow-up development programs. Over 20,000 houses had been constructed in different
states as part of the relief and rehabilitation works taken up by Caritas India through
its partner organizations, he added. ”We simply rush to help the needy, and work for
formation of a just and sustaining social order nurturing the values of love, equality
and peace,” he said.
