“Moving Mountains towards Global Sustainable Development”. That’s the main theme of
the World Mountain Conference which will take place from the 11th to 12th
October in Lucerne, Switzerland. The two day meeting will look at developments in
global mountain development since the Rio Earth Summit in 1992 and will also focus
on future challenges and opportunities. “A green economy is actually the key for
sustainability because we are talking about a low carbon economy, we are talking about
the better use of natural resources”, says Olman Serrano, Co-ordinator, of the Mountain
Partnership Secretariat and Senior Forestry Officer at the Food and Agriculture Organisation.
He
also told Lydia O’Kane that “if we talk about green economy mountain development,
we are talking about water resources…but we are talking about other issues like even
agriculture”.
The Lucerne Conference runs until October 12th. Listen
