Pope’s message to the Episcopal Conferences of Europe
(October 01, 2011) Pope Benedict XVI sent a message to the Council of European Bishops’
conferences (CCEE-it’s Latin acronym) holding their Plenary Assembly at Tirana, capital
of the Albanian Republic, on their 40th anniversary. Vatican Secretary
of State, Tarcisio Bertone, addressed a letter on behalf of the Pope to Hungarian
Cardinal, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, Péter Erdó. President of the CCEE. The
Assembly, on the theme of the New Evangelization, that started on Friday will conclude
on Sunday 2nd October. The Pope urged the Bishops to forge ahead boldly
on the paths of Evangelization, focusing specially on the new generations. He encouraged
them to consider their conference a precious set-up linking their pastoral and ecumenical
activities on the European continent. Cardinal Erdó remarked with gratitude that
Providence had liberated countries once under totalitarian regimes, Now with such
newborn countries Europe could “ breathe with two lungs” as Blessed Pope John Paul
II used to say. . The Cardinal highlighted the economic plight of the Continent, but
remarked that more alarming was the ethical crisis that has seeped into families,
into the educational structures and the Media.. Currently the EECC is made up of
33 Conferences. The request of Bishop Milan Šašik of the eparchy of Mukachevo of
the Rutenians of the Bizantine Rite to join the EECC was accepted.
