A Pakistani court has found guilty and sentenced to death the police bodyguard who
killed Punjab Governor Salman Taseer in January. A judge gave Mumtaz Qadri two death
sentences: one for murder and the other for terrorism. A member of Punjab governor
Salman Taseer's protection detail, Qadri opened fire on the governor as he was about
to get into his car in the capital, Islamabad, on January 4th of this year.
The assassination divided Pakistan, with many hailing Qadri as a hero. The trial was
held at a high-security prison in the garrison town, Rawalpindi, outside the political
