(September 26, 2011) As part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of
the western Indian Archdiocese of Bombay, the city of Mumbai has now its first museum
of Christian art. Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay, inaugurated the
museum on Saturday at the St Pius seminary in Goregaon. Spread across 2,000 square
feet on the first floor of the seminary, the museum will initially cater to Catholic
students from parishes and church council members only on appointment. The authorities
have also set up a museum on wheels, which will be taken to parishes in the city.
“It is a great contribution to the cultural heritage of the state,” Cardinal Gracias
said. He said that the location in St Pius Seminary was apt since it is the heart
of the Archdiocese. “Here, theology is not just learned; it is created and practised,”
he added. Father Warner D’souza, head of the Catholic Church Committee on Heritage,
said there is no specific entrance fee as yet but any contribution by visitors would
be gracefully accepted.
