Pope felicitates Brazilian cardinal on 25 years as bishop

(September 16, 2011) Pope Benedict XVI has sent his hearty greetings and best wishes to Brazilian Cardinal Raymundo Damasceno Assis, Archbishop of Aparecida on completing 25 years as bishop on Friday. The 74 year old cardinal was ordained priest in 1968 and consecrated bishop on September 15, 1986, as Auxiliary bishop of Brasilia. He was appointed Archbishop of Aparecida on Jan. 28, 2004, and made cardinal by Pope Benedict on Nov. 20, last year. In his message Pope Benedict recalled the Cardinal’s life from his young days until date, particularly commending his work with priests, religious, and lay faithful in the fields of catechesis, liturgy and charity works. Commending his commitment to the Gospel marked by great zeal and sound interpretation of Church doctrine, the Holy Father recalled the prelate’s contribution as secretary and president of the Latin America’s Bishops’ Council and secretary of Brazilian bishops. In the Vatican Cardinal Damasceno Assis serves as member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications and the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
