Anglican communion faces the new economic challenges


(September 03.09.2011) The secretaries of 25 anglican provinces in Mexico met in Mexico city from 25th August to 1st September to discuss the prospects of carrying out their religious mission in the face of world economic crises. Besides the Mexican representatives there was also one delegate from the Anglican Community of Sri Lanka. At the beginning of their meetings they received greetings from the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams. The welcome speech was pronounced by the Primate of the anglican province of Mexico, Revd Carlos Touche-Porter, who pointed out how recently the catholic faithful of Mexico had deepened their awareness of the grand patrimony of spiritual riches deriving from their original culture and learned to develop autonomously even from the Anglican culture elsewhere. During the discussions the difficulties of the little Anglican community of Japan in the face of help to earthquake victims was highlighted. The question of restoring their places of worship in New Zealand also came to the fore. Sally Keeble, in charge of the Anglican Alliance for Development and Relief proposed programmes for development. Similarly other officials presented their projects. The participants hailed from the provinces of Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polinesia, Australia, Bangladesh, Brasil,, Burundi, Canada, central Africa, Congo, England , Hong Kong, Indian Ocean, Ireland, Japan, Nigeria, North India, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, South Africa, South America, Tanzania, the episcopalian Comunity of North America, Wales, West Africa, and East Indies.
