is only one vocation lived out in a wide variety of complementary gifts and ministries.
That spirit of collaboration amongst all baptised members of the Church lies at the
heart of the Marianist family and its mission in over 40 countries around the globe.
The original Society of Mary was founded by a French priest Fr William Joseph
Chaminade, who was born in 1761 but suffered persecution and exile during the French
revolution. Today that society has grown and the different branches of the Marianist
family now include priests, brothers, sisters, as well as consecrated lay men and
women. With a strong focus on education, they run schools and universities, as well
as other centres and programmes providing physical and spiritual care for children
and young people in countries across the world. But Marianist men and women are to
be found in many other areas of ministry, as the current secretary general of the
