(August 27, 2011) The Holy Father has sent a letter of condolence to Archbishop
Thomas Collins of Torontofor the death, Friday, after a long illness, of Cardinal
Aloysius Matthew Ambrozic, retired Archbishop of Toronto, Canada, . He was 81 years
old. Born in 1930 at Gabrje, in Slovenia, he emigrated with his family to Canada
in 1945 after the 2nd world war, having lived in Austrian refugee camps.
Ordained priest in 1955 he was consecrated Bishop in 1976. In 1990 he became Archbishop
of Toronto and retired in 1996. He was created a Cardinal by Pope John Paul II in
1998. He is the author of many written works. He was a delegate at the Synod of 1990
on the Formation of Priests and at the Synod of 1994 on Consecrated Life. With his
death the College of Cardinals drops to 194, including 114 electors and 80 non electors.
