August 23, 2011: Local Catholic Church leaders of Bangladesh have officially unveiled
their long cherished plan to open the first Church-run university in the country. About
100 people including two archbishops, some priests, nuns, brothers and laypeople attended
a meeting organized by Bangladesh Catholic Education Board (BCEB) and Task Force for
Catholic University in Bangladesh at center in Dhaka on August 19. Coadjutor Archbishop
Patrick D’Rozario of Dhaka, head of BCEB, told the gathering that opening a Catholic
university is great long-cherished dream for the Bangladesh Church. “It’s a revolutionary
step signifying the maturity of the local Church, opening new horizons of service
from the Church. The long-standing demand of Bangladeshi intellectuals and educated
people is near to its end,” he said. Task Force member Holy Cross Father Hemanta
Rozario said educationist priests, nuns and brothers from his congregation first discussed
the issue formally last year and the task force was set up to assess feasibility and
capability for a Church-run university in Bangladesh. is the largest religious
order serving in Bangladesh. Mainly engaged in education ministry Holy Cross priests,
nuns and brothers run some of country’s finest schools and colleges. “The name of
the proposed university will be ‘Notre Dame University’ and it will be administered
by the Holy Cross under the authorship of local Church,” said Fr. Rozario, vice-principal
at in Dhaka.
