The storm that interrupted Saturday night’s prayer vigil at Madrid’s Cuatros Vientos
airport did more than just prevent the Holy Father from completing his homily. Strong
winds and driving rain damaged several large tents where the consecrated hosts were
being stored for Sunday morning’s mass for World Youth Day. After conducting inspections
of the tents and scaffolding, Spanish police decided to close some of the tents where
the hosts were being stored because they were in danger of collapsing. Vatican spokesman
Fr. Federico Lombardi has explained that for these security reasons, many young people
attending Sunday’s liturgy will not be able to receive Communion.
