Papal Legate to the 500th anniversary in the Dominican Republic
(July 30, 2011) Pope Benedict XVI has named Franciscan Cardinal Carlos Amigo Vallejo,
retired Archbishop of Seville in Spain, as his special legate to the closing ceremonies
of the 500th anniversary of the canonical erection of the first ecclesiastical
regions of the Americas, namely Santo Domingo and La Vega in the Dominican Republic
and San Juan of Puerto Rico. The celebrations will culminate from the 7th
to the 9th of August next. The Pope’s official letter of appointment is
dated, Castel Gandolfo, 11th July. These ecclesiastical provinces were
erected by Pope Julius II in 1511.
