The leaders of the Church in Sudan and South Sudan gathered in the South Sudanese
diocese of Rumbek on Thursday for the funeral of Bishop Caesar Mazzolari, who died
on Saturday. Bishop Caesar Mazzolari lived to see his dream become reality – he
died just one week after South Sudan became an independent country. He served as
the leader of the diocese of Rumbek since 1990 – first as apostolic administrator,
and then from 1999 as bishop. During the long period of conflict in Sudan, he urged
his people to peace and reconciliation. Upon hearing of his death, Pope Benedict
sent a message of condolence praising the bishop for his selfless service to the people
of Africa. Listen:
