Sant'Egidio to mark 10th anniversary of 9/11 with prayer
(July 20, 2011) Ten years after the attack on New York's World Trade Center in the
US, a lay Catholic group of Italy is teaming with the German Cardinal of Munich for
a prayerful event to promote religious and cultural dialogue. On Sept. 11, the Community
of Sant'Egidio and Cardinal Reinhard Marx will host "Bound to Live Together: Religions
and Cultures in Dialogue," in Munich. The three-day event will bring together
leaders of world religions, and government and civil representatives, and will lead
up to the Assisi day of prayer for peace, called by Pope Benedict XVI for October.
Representing the Holy See will be Cardinals Kurt Koch, president of the Pontifical
Council for Christian Unity, Roger Etchegaray, retired president of the Pontifical
Council for Justice and Peace, and Leonardo Sandri, prefect of the Congregation for
Eastern Churches. The German government will be represented by the president of the
republic, Christian Wulff, opening the event and Chancellor Angela Merkel addressing
the assembly Sept. 12. The chief rabbi of Rome is expected to attend.
