Pope Benedict XVI is due to go on a four day Apostolic visit to Germany from the 22nd
to the 25th of September.
A journey which marks the Pope’s third
return to his homeland, the chosen theme being: “Where God is, the future is” and
begins in the nation’s capital, Berlin and from there on to Erfurt, Etzelsbach and
Freiburg.
In Berlin on the morning of the first day of his travels, the Holy
Father is scheduled to be officially welcomed by Federal President Christian Wulff
at the Bellevue Castle Residence and later meet with the Federal Chancery at the headquarters
of the German Bishop’s Conference.
On the agenda in the afternoon the first
Holy Mass of this visit to be celebrated at the Olympic Stadium which follows an earlier
meeting with representatives of the Jewish Community at the nation’s “Reichstag”.
Before
leaving Berlin for Erfurt on the morning of the 23rd of September Benedict
XVI is scheduled to meet with representatives of the Muslim community.
Shortly
after his arrival in Erfurt the Pope will go to Saint Mary’s Cathedral before meeting
with representatives of the Council of the German Evangelical Church at the Convent
of the Augustinians.
During the afternoon of the same day Benedict is scheduled
to travel to Etzelsbach to celebrate Vespers at the Wallfahrskapelle.
He
returns to Erfurt in the evening and the following morning, Saturday 24th,
he will preside over Holy Mass in the Domplatz (the Cathedral Square) of Erfurt.
The Pope will then travel to the city of Freiburg where he is due to meet
with Germany’s former Chancellor, Helmut Kohl, in the Freiburg Seminary. It is here
where he will also have an encounter with representatives of the Orthodox Churches,
with the seminarians themselves, and finally with the Council of the Central Committee
of German Catholics (ZDK).
Later in the evening the Pope will participate
in a Prayer Vigil with young people.
On the morning of Sunday 25th,
the Holy Father is scheduled to preside at the third Holy Mass of this Apostolic journey
to be held at Freiburg Airport.
In the afternoon and encounter with a group
of Catholics in the Freiburg Concert Hall will be preceded by a meeting with the Judges
of the Federal Constitutional Court at Freiburg Seminary.
Pope Benedict XVI
ends his visit on Sunday evening with a farewell ceremony at Lahr Airport and is due
to arrive back at the Vatican just before 9pm.
