The UN official in Lakes State, South Sudan, Renuka Chidambaram said that the reason
the UN Security Council and the UN Security General have proposed a new United Nations
Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is because the UN is committed to assisting the Republic
of South Sudan to meet its many responsibilities.
She clarified the partnership
will focus on building institutions that can make the world’s newest republic realize
a stable, strong, and ultimately prosperous nation.
Chidambaram went on to
highlight some of the main challenges the new Republic of South Sudan has to face
after the Independence Day celebrations, among them, high maternal mortality rate,
illiteracy, poverty, insecurity and infrastructural underdevelopment.
