A train hit a bus at a railway crossing in northern India early Thursday morning,
killing at least 35 people returning from a wedding party. The accident happened
outside a village 350 kilometers southwest of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh
state.
The bus was overcrowded, carrying 80 people, including several riding
on the roof. It had stopped on an unmanned railroad crossing after breaking an axle.
“The
train started at 1:40 am and collided with a bus at the railroad crossing. We have
questioned the villagers and the reveal the bus stopped on the tracks, and did not
start due to some problem, even as the train approached.... It definitely looks like
it happened due to negligence on the bus driver’s part,” said Saurabh Srivastav, Superintendent
for Police for Etah.
The bride and the groom were travelling in a separate
vehicle and were not among the victims.
